The primary goal of pore engineering is the development of porous materials. It includes but is not limited to the generation of various levels (microporous, mesoporous, and macroporous) of porosity, the creation of hierarchically porous structures, pore surface modification, pore combination and partition, as well as the construction of composite materials.1 The presentation will start from molecular assembly of highly connected MOFs from basic building blocks.2 By tuning linker conformations and symmetries, we are able to discover a series of unprecedented topologies through systematic steric tuning, which can further serve as a blueprint for the design and construction of highly complicated porous structures. Subsequently, multiple ways of stable-MOF construction will be illustrated. The assembly of a synthetic toolkit, including linker labilization, linker thermolysis, linker reinstallation, and retrosynthesis, enables the sophisticated design of a MOF target.3-5 Finally, we will illustrate a set of novel synthetic strategies to add structural complexity and functionality to an existing MOF by mesoscopic construction of multicomponent hierarchical MOFs.6-9 The utility of these pore engineering tools will be demonstrated through examples in heterogeneous catalysis.10-11
